DAY 2-4: MAKGADIKGADI NATIONAL PARK

Activities: Game drives morning/afternoon
Wake up have breakfast then we depart to Makgadikgadi Pans for 3nights. A salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up tens of thousands of years ago. Recent studies of human mitochondrial DNA suggest that modern Homo sapiens first began to evolve in this region some 200,000 years ago, when it was a vast, exceptionally fertile area of lakes, rivers, marshes, woodlands and grasslands especially favorable for habitation by evolving hominins and other mammals. Very little wildlife can exist here during the harsh dry season of strong hot winds and only salt water, but following a rain the pan becomes an important habitat for migrating animals including wildebeest and one of Africa's biggest zebra populations, and the large predators that prey on them. The wet season also brings migratory birds such as ducks, geese and great white pelicans. The pan is home of one of only two breeding populations of greater flamingos in southern Africa, and only on the Sowa pan, which is part of the Makgadikgadi pans. The other breeding population is at Etosha, in the Northern part of Namibia. The only birds here in the dry season are ostriches, chestnut-banded plover (Charadrius pallidus) and Kittlitz's plover (Charadrius pecuarius). The grasslands on the fringes of the pan are home to reptiles such as tortoises, rock monitor (Varanus albigularis), snakes and lizards including the endemic Makgadikgadi spiny agama (Agama hispida makgadikgadiensis)

DAY 5-7: CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE

Activities: Game drives morning/afternoon We drive to CKGR where we will camp for 3nights at Deception Valley. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (referred to as CKGR) is the second largest reserve in the world and by far the most remote reserve in Southern Africa. The CKGR covers an area of 52000 square kilometers and it is home to rhino, black-maned lion and desert-adapted elephants among other striking game species. As testament to the Central Kalahari’s old age, it is home to the San people, an ancient hunter-gatherer society that have transcended the ages with their excellent hunting skills and ability to adapt to the harsh environmental challenges presented by this enormous desert. Unlike other Botswana safari destinations, January through to April is the best time to visit. During this rainy, ‘green season’ in Botswana, the beautiful interdune valley become lush with vegetation, attracting thousands of springboks and gemsbok (Oryx), a good number of ostriches, herds of wildebeest as well as giraffe. The green season also signals the calving season where hundreds of newborns come into the world during this period, making for some truly exciting predator-prey interaction and stellar photographic opportunities.

DAY 8-10:KHWAI

Activities: Game drives morning/afternoon Wake up early morning, have breakfast, we depart to Khwai via Maun. The Khwai Concession is a 1800km area which is situated in the northeastern Okavango next to the Moremi Game Reserve. It was formed by the local Khwai villagers and is managed by the Khwai Development Trust. The area used to be a hunting concession but is now actively managed as a conservation area. The area is dominated by grasslands, permanent flood plains and large areas of Mopane forests. Large herds of elephants take their bath next to hippos, whilst being watched by lechwe antelopes. Photogenic leopards, spotted hyenas and large packs of wild dogs will make the heart of any wildlife lover beat faster. Every now and then prides of lions can be seen. A lot of animals migrate down during the dry season from the Linyanti area, as the Khwai River forms a reliable source of water attracting many antelopes, giraffes, buffalos, and zebras. There are of course also uncountable bird species, especially egrets, cranes, vultures and different species of eagles, specializing in catching catfish.

DAY 1-3: MOREMI GAME RESERVE

Activities: Game drives morning/afternoon
Arrival at Maun Airport, our guide will meet you and give you a full safari briefing before we depart to Moremi for 3nights. Moremi Game Reserve is a protected area in Botswana. It lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and was named after Chief Moremi of the Batawana tribe. Moremi was designated as a game reserve, rather than a national park, when it was created. This designation meant that the Basarwa or Bushmen that lived there were allowed to stay in the reserve. Proclaimed a reserve in 1963, it was named after Chief Moremi III of the local Batawana tribe from Ngamiland. Chief Moremi's widow, Elizabeth Pulane Moremi, - who was ruling the area at the time, took steps to conserve the wildlife due to her concern about the toll hunting was taking on the animal population. In the 1970s Chief Moremi's Royal Hunting Grounds were included into the Reserve to further expand it.[ Moremi Game Reserve, although not one of the largest parks, presents insights and views even for the most experienced of travelers. Its habitats are surprisingly diverse, combining mopane woodland and acacia forests, floodplains and lagoons. It is home to nearly 500 species of bird (from water birds to forest dwellers), and a vast array of other species of wildlife including lion, leopard, African bush elephant, African buffalo, black rhinoceros, hippopotamus, giraffe, plains zebra, blue wildebeest, cheetah, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, common warthog, impala, and lechwe. The Moremi area is considered a significant habitat for African wild dog and the populations there have been the subject of a project run in the area since 1989; thus this species is often seen wearing collars emplaced by researchers

DAY 4-6: KHWAI

Activities: Game drives morning/afternoon
The Khwai Concession is a 1800km area which is situated in the northeastern Okavango next to the Moremi Game Reserve. It was formed by the local Khwai villagers and is managed by the Khwai Development Trust. The area used to be a hunting concession but is now actively managed as a conservation area. There are of course also uncountable bird species, especially egrets, cranes, vultures and different species of eagles, specializing in catching catfish.

DAY 7-9: SAVUTI

Activities: Game drives morning/afternoon Wake up early morning and transfer to Savuti through Mababe. Savuti is the huge area sprawling across the western side of Chobe National Park. It’s comprised of grassland and savanna habitats that attract astounding concentrations of wildlife. It is renowned for its annual zebra migration and the associated predators that give chase, such as lions, hyena and cheetah. Savuti is also known for its elephant-hunting lions, a rather rare phenomenon and one that might be attributed to the notoriously large size of prides there. Elephants congregate in amazing numbers in the dry season. The Savuti Channel is an unpredictable water source that flows from Linyanti to the heart of Chobe National Park and Savuti Marsh. The water has appeared and dried up again many times over the centuries, leading to a diverse landscape. The scenery is certainly striking, from the desert-like patches covered in sand to the verdant grassy plains, pans holding water for animals long into the dry season, and the Gubatsa Hills, an outcrop of dolomite rocks rising an astonishing 90 meters out of the ground. You will camp here for 3nights.

DAY 10-12:CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

Activities: Game drives. Afternoon Boat Cruise Arrive in the afternoon in Chobe, Botswana's first national park, and also the most biologically diverse. Located in the north of the country, it is Botswana's third largest park, after Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Gemsbok National Park. This park is noted for having a population of lions which prey on elephants, mostly calves or juveniles, but also sub adults. The original inhabitants of this area were the San bushmen (also known as the Basarwa people in Botswana). They were nomadic hunter-gatherers who were constantly moving from place to place to find food sources, namely fruit, water and wild animals. Nowadays one can find San paintings inside rocky hills of the park. At the beginning of the 20th century, the region that would become Botswana was divided into different land tenure systems. At that time, a major part of the park's area was classified as crown land. The idea of a national park which would protect the varied local wildlife and promote tourism was first proposed in 1931. The following year, 24,000 km2 (9,300 sq mi) around Chobe district were officially declared a non-hunting area, and this area was expanded to 31,600 km2 (12,200 sq mi) two years later. In 1943, heavy tsetse infestations occurred throughout the region, delaying the creation of the national park. By 1953, the project received governmental attention again: 21,000 km2 (8,100 sq mi) were suggested to become a game reserve. Chobe Game Reserve was officially created in 1960, though smaller than initially desired. In 1968, the reserve was declared a national park. At that time there were several industrial settlements in the region, especially at Serondela, where the timber industry proliferated.
